Joan Sargeant, PhD is Professor and Acting Head, Division of Medical Education, and Director Research and Evaluation, Office of Continuing Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She received her Master in Education from Dalhousie University, and her PhD in Medical Education from the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. She is involved in many aspects of medical education- design, implementation, teaching, evaluation, research and administration, and has studied multiple aspects of Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development (CME/CPD). Within CME she has conducted research in interprofessional education (IPE) and collaboration, investigating the theoretical perspectives and factors influencing effective IPE and team work, and educational design for IPE. Another major research interest is physician performance assessment and self-assessment with emphasis on how feedback is provided, responded to and used, and how self-assessment is informed. She is currently the recipient of the SACME Philip Manning Research Award and leads an international team developing a model to enhance feedback acceptance and use. Other research interests include knowledge translation and communication skills (doctor-patient, peer, team).

Joan is active in professional associations and committees nationally and internationally. Outside work, she enjoys sailing, gardening, skiing and spending time with family and friends.
